Bertie goes to Sandringham, October 11-14 2018

We make a ‘royal’ visit to Sandringham estate with the motorhome, a caravan and motorhome club site just 2 miles from the house and within the estate. Beautiful area of parkland and woodland, full of walks and quiet roads for cycling around. I’m still not fully recovered from the broken elbow/wrist/ribs accident so I take the hybrid bike along and manage a few gentle rides with Denise who took her e-bike.
Here’s the first ‘reccie’ ride around the estate roads to find our bearings …

Then back to the site, very quiet and not much going on and even less on the airwaves so no TV, no data – only the radio.
The next day we cycle to the entrance for a day visit to the house, gardens and museum…

The entrance to the house etc., our two bikes are chained up at the same place they hook up horses years ago! We were the only people arriving by bike.

Once inside the gate, you are treated to the manicured gardens and views across the lawns to the house.

The house is not owned by the state, it is a private house belonging to the royal family and so they let us look around the ground floor only, not the bedrooms or kitchens.

We are not allowed to take photos inside the house, but because it is very quiet we get a lot of good tips and chat to the guides who explain a lot about what the family get up to when they come up here to stay over the Christmas period. We head off from the house across the gardens to the museum ..

From the museum we can walk some more of the gardens and lakes on the way back out via the church that adjoins the house. This is where we see people waiting patiently on Christmas morning for a view of the royal family as they make their way to church.

The next day we make a longer bike ride to Hunstanton.

National Cycle Route 1 with Denise. Stop at Gin and Trap for lunch (100 gins on tap including their own).

Along the way, the clouds moved in and it started to pour down. So we managed to take shelter in a deer park with a cafe.

We spotted a pub named the Gin Trap on the way to Hunstanton, so we stopped there for lunch on the way back – Denise could choose from over 100 gins and I could choose from a good few ales.

Hi Martin,

Cool stories and beautiful picture.
I wonder what a hybrid bike looks like. Does it look like trekking bike or more like a lighter version of a MTB hardtrail?

By the way I took a MTB tour in Fuerteventura in December. Very challenging but nice. I recommend look at https://www.volcano-bike.com/en if you are around.

  Hi Oliver, sorry I missed your update on the blog. It wasn’t checked by me this year until just now, because last weekend I completed my first cycle sportive in Belgium.
  I did intend to go with ‘Bertie’ to Brighton in late March but I had to cancel due to ill health (I’m all OK now). I hope to add a few new motorhome trips very soon! Take care and thanks again for checking and commenting 🙂
