Sandringham and Southwold, June 9-13 2021

Another short break in Bertie, these two sites are becoming our ‘go to’ to get Bertie on the road each year. First up at Sandringham, just a 3 hour trip away from home and a nice site in the grounds of the royal estate. The only issue there is no 3g/4g signal at the site so a short bike ride up the road 1/2 mile and we can reach civilisation again. Feeling a lot better than the last time I was here when I was struggling with the asthma, so I take a beautiful quiet roads journey from the site up to Holkham Hall via Houghton Hall (about 20 miles each way). The day was so hot, I only took one bottle cage on the bike, all pubs and shops were shut on the route so on the way back I was gasping for water and so I asked some builders doing a house up in Almer – close to Kate and Will’s house if they could replenish my bottle!

First thing after setting up is a cup of tea! Bikes are ready to roll.

Have to make our usual stop at the royal butcher for a few sausages and pies!

Across the road from the butcher’s.

My bike journey to/from Holkham Hall was almost entirely on roads like this, I call it God’s cycling country. So very quiet, very few cars.

The site has a few rabbits that come pretty close.

Next up, we move to our most favourite site, Haw Wood Farm near Southwold Suffolk. Beautiful shower blocks here and a shop/cafe that serves the campers well.

We’re on a fully serviced gravel pitch, plenty big enough for us and the awning – but what’s that! It was a huge rock star motorhome with the unusual trailer attached.

He brings his BMW along for the ride and of course he can drive down the country roads unlike his bus. He races his Porsch(es) and tours around in his bus between venues, just now though he’s taking a break from racing.

Russ makes the trip up in the mini, hoping that Pip will stay overnight in the motorhome. But she is really unsettled and in the wee small hours Russ takes her back home. Meanwhile, she seemed to enjoy Suffolk!

Dunwich beach, Pip’s not allowed on Aldeburgh – we went there first in the car.

Russ called me, he was in Southwold with Pip – so I cycled there from Haw Wood as quick as I could so we could have a pint! This is the green outside the Red Lion.

Denise and I cycle to Minsmere, not so far. We walk around close to the visitor centre as shown in the map.
