Inaugural trip! We stop overnight on Thursday at Aust. We hook up Bertie to the electric to keep the fridge running! We show Jim and Linda around it, Freddie being host and showing off the drop-down bed of course!
First stop on Friday, didn’t serve any food (around 2.15pm).
Had a drink and moved on further up the quay to a tea rooms and had a sandwich. The only good thing about stopping here, we saw that there was plenty of room to park Bertie on the road for the last day. A man told us that the pub at the quay, http://www.theoldshipaground.com/ served good food – but only until 2.30pm. We stopped there on the last day instead and parked Bertie outside, he was right – really good food.
First solo cycle out from caravan site on Saturday bright and early (on standby!!!). Flippin’ steep hill at the back of Dunster – kept going up, Strava ride here … https://www.strava.com/activities/1550298764
Same cycle ride but now descending into the Blue Anchor Bay.
Later on Saturday, cycle ito Dunster with Denise.
Here she comes, on her e-bike!
A bit too early for lunch in Dunster, so we decide to keep going to the Blue Anchor – had a drink there but didn’t like the look of the food menu so kept on goingto Watchet …
Up and down, but gorgeous weather
We stopped at the Star Inn for lunch – very nice too!
View back at the downhill into Watchet

Used the cycle path from Carhampton to Dunster.

Here’s Bertie all levelled up on Sunday morning, bikes propped up and ready to roll on for another trip.
We go to Dunster first, then head south and right into Knowle lane. Absolutely beautiful cycle ride, we end up in Horner tea rooms – part of the NT Holnicote estate.
Lots of ramblers at the tea rooms, and only 2 other bikes (mountain), I have the only road bike on view. The cake at this place was amazing!
Around Luccombe
One of the hills was too much for Denise to make it up – walked it up – very hot!
Crossroads at the Dunkery Beacon House and Hotel
The light comingthrough the tree canopy was fabulous – the leaves not fully formed yet brought this really bright vista.
Typical road from Horner to Dunster
Between Dunster and Minehead, alternative route to the A39 main road.
Almost back at Minehead now.
Minehead Caravan and Motorhome club main building, facilities were excellent and clean etc., just an episode with the gas supply meant hot water was off for a day 🙁
Bank Holiday Monday and I’m not on standby – so we decide to try and get to Porlock/weir via the top end of Minehead. We go past the Carvan and Camping club site – and then up and up and up – and Denise nearly threw her bike at me it was a relentless climb up out of Minehead! Here’s the Strava ride, look at the profile … https://www.strava.com/activities/1555755687
Almost at the top – starts to look like typical Exmoor heathers and open landscape.
I can see the sea!
On top of the world here – fantastic views – about 3 miles outside of Minehead.
This is actually the Sustrans cycle route 51, only good for off road bikes and bloody steep so we walked it down to Selworthy (about 1km descent)
Almost at Selworthy
Periwinkle tea rooms at Selworthy
view from tea rooms
Not a brilliant lunch – but refreshed anyway for the next leg of journey. We check the battery on Denise’s e-bike and it’s near 60% so we chicken out of going to Porlock weir and instead head back to the same route we made yesterday – just avoiding Horner and picking it up at Luccombe after a short spell on the A39
Cows!!
Cows!!
Cows!!!
Stop in Dunster for a Gin and Tonic – well earned!
and an ice-crea on the high street
Checked out of club site in Tuesday and we go to the pub on Minehead quay for an early lunch – very good!
