Bertie goes to Suffolk (again) 15-18 April 2019

We set off on our first motorhome trip of 2019 to the site we’d most liked from 2018, Haw Wood Farm, Hinton, Suffolk.

Although it was fairly breezy, it stayed dry with sunny periods throughout. Denise took her ebike and I took the Cannondale with the toe clips. It’s not only a brilliant site with good facilities but also a perfect location for cycling the quiet Suffolk lanes – although for some reason we were the only ones from the site setting out on bikes everywhere. We did have a bit of an issue putting up the awning in the stiff breeze, but lessons were learnt and it stayed up for the duration – just as well because it kept out the chilly easterly breeze coming off the North Sea.

Monday 15th April

We take the bikes out for a spin, this time we head for the North side of the A12. This is the crossroads outside the pub we found in Bramfield – very cosy inside and only a couple of others inside (it is only 4pm).
Ahh, mine is actually an Adnams Ghostship and Denise has the Adnams Copperhouse gin.
Real warm and cosy with the log burner
After Bramfield, we head back to the site via Thorington. Hoped to see a bit more, but only really the church exists there.

Tuesday 16th April 2019

We head towards Southwold, on the way we head into Walberswick and find this delightful tea rooms on the green. It was empty inside, but don’t know why because the coffee and cake and service was lovely. Probably gets rammed later on nearer lunchtime.
The green at Walberswick from outside the tea rooms.
We get to Southwold and park up the bikes at the Adnams visitor centre. We stroll around the town and high street and take a look at the iconic beach huts.
Lovely town.
The steps down to the beach, very near the Lord Nelson pub.
Pastel coloured beach huts, trying to be a bit arty with the mobile phone (I forgot my camera – doh!).
On the promenade above the beach.
Back at the site and showing the awning attached.

Wednesday 17th April 2019

Today we head off on the bikes towards Aldeburgh, via Thorpeness. Mostly very quiet roads with just a couple of half busy stretches I could avoid in future. This picture is of the beach at Thorpeness looking south.
The beach at Thorpeness looking north.
The junction outside the Dolphin pub, old Alms houses.
Getting ready for the short hop from Thorpeness to Aldeburgh. Many people out walking their dogs for the 2-3 miles walk between the two along the beach.
Now we get to Aldeburgh, a beautiful old seaside town with a high street running parallel to the beach. Here’s a quaint little detached seaside cottage no bigger than a postage stamp!
The street running along the seafront. Lots of fresh fish huts selling the local caught catch of the day. After a stroll around the town, we head back towards Thorpeness to get lunch.
The Dolphin pub.
Ordered lunch at the Dolphin pub on the junction into Thorpeness, we sat outside in the pub garden with quite a few others – busy. That’s an Adnams Orange and Sea Buckthorn gin and tonic and I think I had another Adnam’s Ghostship.
On the way back to the Haw Wood site we stop at Leiston Abbey.
Take a few pictures of the ruins.
Back at the site, we treat ourselves to a gin and tonic. I take a picture and boast to Richard that we’ve sunk two bottles of gin in a single afternoon 🙂

Thursday 18th April 2019

We have to vacate the site today by 11am, so we just cycled about a half mile to the Two Magpies bakery and cafe on the A12 junction of the site access road. We walked here and had a coffee and got some bread on Tuesday morning. Fabulous french bread and sourdough, they even have bakery classes! Of course we’re the only mad people on bikes, but it would make a perfect Peddlers coffee stop.
