Bertie takes Freddie to South Wales, 8-11 August 2019

We had booked Pembrey Sands Country Park CAMC site a while ago because it looked like a perfect location for me and Denise to kidnap Freddie for a few days! We’d told him about it the week before and he was so excited about going, of course sleeping in the drop-down bed was a highlight – this was our opportunity to use it for the first time.Denise and I set off from home on the 7th and stayed over at Rich and Nic’s in Aust to say hello to them and Allegra before setting off the next day with Freddie. The weather forecast was horrendous, heavy rain and high winds –…

Bertie takes me and Russ to South Devon, 15-18 July 2019

Keen to get some cycling and walking in, we set off to the same site as last year (Start Bay CAMC) because I knew it was a bit hilly around there! Just me and Russ go this time, we prepare with some fishing tackle also, to fish the beach at Slapton Sands. Weather was a bit changeable, but mostly dry – however we cut the trip short by one day because Russ was suffering from a bad back or trapped nerve.Regardless, we still managed to get a few decent rides in – and some sea fishing from the beach! Russ slept in the awning first night, but inside after that….

Bertie tours Holland/Germany/Alsace June 25 – July 11 2019

Denise and I make a summer holiday touring some places across the channel that we suspect will be really good for cycling. We stayed at three sites, crossed the channel by P&O ferry and also rented a small car for a few days in Alsace. Denise took her e-bike and I took my hybrid, guessing that some off road would be on the menu.Well, not really off road – in fact I should have taken a road bike especially for Alsace where we met up with the Tour de France stage 5. Holland (Delft) was just so easy to cycle in and around town and in the surrounding countryside, Germany…

Mallorca, 9-25 May 2019

A family holiday to celebrate my retirement, we rented a large 5 bedroom villa on the outskirts of Puerto Pollensa. Denise and I, Russ, Rich, Nic, Freddie, Allegra, David and Dixie all flew from the UK to spend a couple of weeks in the sun. Russ entered the Ironman on the 11th so he took his Cervelo P3 (and also rented a road bike), me and David took our own bikes over and Rich rented a bike. We planned to do some cycling, Denise, Dixie and even Freddie rented a bike for a few days to get to the beach and back!Overall, the weather was mostly sunny but it got…

Bertie goes to Yorkshire, 1-5 May 2019

We go to watch the Tour of Yorkshire cycling race and spend a few days touring the area around Scarborough. The site we pitched in was a club site at West Ayton, along the route of day 2 of the tour (Forge Valley). Denise made her longest bike ride into Robin Hood’s Bay …

Bertie goes to Suffolk (again) 15-18 April 2019

We set off on our first motorhome trip of 2019 to the site we’d most liked from 2018, Haw Wood Farm, Hinton, Suffolk. https://goo.gl/maps/toUxE3VwVg6r7TaZ7 Although it was fairly breezy, it stayed dry with sunny periods throughout. Denise took her ebike and I took the Cannondale with the toe clips. It’s not only a brilliant site with good facilities but also a perfect location for cycling the quiet Suffolk lanes – although for some reason we were the only ones from the site setting out on bikes everywhere. We did have a bit of an issue putting up the awning in the stiff breeze, but lessons were learnt and it stayed…

Ronde van Vlaanderen 6-9 April 2019 (Tour of Flanders)

Six of the Peddlers set off early on Friday morning to cycle the Ronde van Vlaanderen amateur sportive on Saturday and to watch the professionals ride the famous race on Sunday.  Also, Richard and his mate Gary drove from Bristol to join us at the hotel in Kortrijk (IBIS Centrum) and ride with us.  Pete once again made a sterling job of the ‘team bus’ adding the RvV logos making it look like an official vehicle! A little bit of bad timing for me, I had a mystery chest infection/virus for several weeks before (also in Australia), eventually leading to a trip to the hospital A&E two weeks before the…

Bertie goes to Sandringham, October 11-14 2018

We make a ‘royal’ visit to Sandringham estate with the motorhome, a caravan and motorhome club site just 2 miles from the house and within the estate.  Beautiful area of parkland and woodland, full of walks and quiet roads for cycling around.  I’m still not fully recovered from the broken elbow/wrist/ribs accident so I take the hybrid bike along and manage a few gentle rides with Denise who took her e-bike. Here’s the first ‘reccie’ ride around the estate roads to find our bearings … Then back to the site, very quiet and not much going on and even less on the airwaves so no TV, no data – only…

Bertie goes to France, Sep 11-Oct 1 2018

We set off in Bertie for our first venture abroad, to France and a little day trip into Spain. For our first venture, we decided to keep to ‘known’ territory so that we wouldn’t get confused or anxious about anything since we knew our bearings and local facilities. The first week was in Roque Gageac on the Dordogne, we picked a site just 10mins walk into town and when we registered at the site the owner (Otto) gave us a privileged riverside pitch – fantastic! The second week we had arranged to spend with Rich and Nic and family, they had a villa booked just outside of Hossegor.  However, when…

Bertie goes to Tewkesbury 30 July – 03 Aug

This trip was changed at short notice from the site at Hythe, Kent.  We hadn’t ever visited the Cotswolds before, so we gave it a go, the advantage here being that the C&MHC site at Tewkesbury is within walking distance of the town and all it’s shops and pubs/restaurants. Our first trip also after retirement, no need to work shifts or head back for standby etc.. Monday 30th July, didn’t really go anywhere – just stayed on-site and put the awning up and BBQ’ed some pulled pork and sausages. Tuesday 31st July, set out to explore a cycle route to the town of Winchcombe, about a 25 mile round trip….
